Los Ranchos de Babosico

History

Los Ranchos de Babosico was founded prior to the mid 1700s. Babosico is also the name of a tributary of the Yaque river. The first mention of the location was in April 5, 1769 where a royal protection was placed under Juan Suriel, vecino de Santiago, issued for the "sitio de Babosico" by Ruperto Vicente de Luyando, del consejo de Su Majestad, oidor y alcalde del crimen de la Real Audiencia y Cancillería de Santo Domingo y juez general subdelegado de realengos. The teritorial limits are described:

“desde las cabezadas de Gurabo, todo el camino real hasta las cabezadas de zalalla; y de las cabezadas de Zalaya á el Charco del Asijar; Bao arriba hasta la boca de Gurabo; todo Gurabo hasta las cabezadas donde se comenzó”

The primary occupations of people living in Los Ranchos de Babosico was farming and ranching with large herds of cattle or pigs. Wealthy land owners such as Nicolás Fernández Torres (died 1816) and Luisa Gerez (died 1806) owned land, livestock, and slaves in Babosico as well as neighboring communities from the late 1700s to the beginning of the 1800s. Nicolás Fernández was noted as owning a slave in Los Ranchos de Babosico named Ramón in 1776, aged 11-12 of the congolese ethnicity for which he paid 11 pesos, 1 silver real, and 11 copper maravedies for evading taxes on his importation.

In 1875, Los Ranchos de Babosico was represented in a census. The location was divided into four sections one for Las Charcas, one for Buenavista, and two for Bahabosico. Of the later two sections, one area was under alcalde Juan de Mata Tavera and the other area was under alcalde Marcelino Alejo. Tavera's section of Babosico had a total of 194 people living there (48 men, 40 women, 53 male children, and 53 female children). Alejo's section of Babosico had a total of 226 people living there (50 men, 50 women, 60 male children, and 66 female children). There was a combined population of 420 people living in Babosico.

On January 12, 1881, the alcalde of Babosico reported the death of José Lazano who was murdered there.

In 1882, Babosico was afflicted by an outbreak of smallpox claiming the lives of two inhabitants. María Jorge Tineo López, daughter of José María Tineo Reyes and María Ramona López and wife of Cayetano Reyes Tineo, died April 9, 1882 at 35 years of age. Inocencia Reyes Diloné, the daughter of Calixto Reyes and María Eusebia Diloné, died May 10, 1882 at 12 years of age.

General Eloy Valerio Suriel, the son of Fernando Valerio, had a relationship with a woman named Carolina Almonte Rodríguez in Los Ranchos de Babosico. They had four children: Eloisa Elvira, Leticia del Carmen, Lorenzo Justiniano, Napoleon "Napoles", and Domitila.

The alcalde of Los Ranchos de Babosico in the 20th century was Fernando "Negro" Díaz Corona, the son of Fernando Díaz Pérez and Ana Rosa Corona Collado. Later on, the alcalde was Nicolás Vargas. Today, Los Ranchos de Babosico is a part of the municipality of Sabana Iglesia under the alcalde professor Rodolfo Antonio Reyes Rodríguez of Zayala, son of Leonte Guillermo Reyes and Carmen Dolores Rodríguez and vice-alcaldesa Santa Teresa Vargas de Almonte.
