Robert Bulte was born in the French port town of Havre-de-Grace (presently known as Le Havre) around 1732. The port had recently been allowed free trade with the Caribbean and became involved in the slave trade. Through this it appears that Robert in some capacity participated in trade between the French Caribbean and his hometown and while the exact circumstances of his arrival in Puerto Rico is unknown, it is implied by the history that he was somehow involved in this. Robert arrived in Puerto Rico in 1769 and established himself in Yauco with the name Roberto. His surname would undergo an extensive series of mutations from Vult to Bulted over the generations, for simplicity the surname with be referred to as Bulté for this section. Roberto Bulté married Micaela de la Cruz y de Torres on June 12, 1780 in Yauco and took up farming.
Micaela was the daughter of Gregorio Collazo y Rodríguez de Olivencia (c. 1712-1788) and Cecilia de Torres y Rivera (c. 1730-1814), landowners in Yauco residing in Sitio de la Sierra and Sitio de Guadianilla. Micaela was a descendant of the Collazo, Rodríguez de Olivencia, de Torres y Figueroa, de Rivera, and Pacheco families of Yauco many with historical ties to San Germán. A sister of Micaela, María de la Cruz Collazo y de Torres, married a different Frenchman from Bordeaux, Santiago Méndez in 1792.
By 1810, Roberto had resided on the island for 41 years as a farmer managing his wife's estate which she had inherited 10 cuerdas of land (equivalent to about 10 acres) from her father in Sitio de la Sierra farming coffee and corn. Roberto was later naturalized in April 1816.
The couple had a large family with 11 children living by 1810.
