Origins

The Payán family of Santiago de los Caballeros have existed in Santiago since the mid 1700s. Two members of this family are confirmed to have descendants in different parts of Santiago. Bruno Payán's descendants remained closer to the city while Fernando Payán's branch went to San José de las Matas and Puerto Plata. The origin of these two men may lie with a Bruno Pallán who was a farmer in Licey. In 1777, Bruno Pallán of Licey registered his illegal slave Felicita who was from the Sósó ethnicity and about 20 years old. This Bruno is highly likely to be the father of Bruno Payán who married Antonia Estrella Fernández and Fernando Payán who married Francisca Estrella Pérez and perhaps the first Pallán to arrive in Santiago. Dionisia Payán's death in Puerto Rico indicated her parents as Bruno Payán and Leonor Tineo. The best assumption at the moment is the this Bruno and Leonor couple were also the parents of Bruno Basilio and Fernando Payán.

The Payán and Estrella families are closely intertwined as both of the branches of Bruno and Fernando Payán being married to an Estrella. Bruno and Fernando Payán both married Estrella women and a Dionicia Payán married Narciso Estrella before arriving in Puerto Rico. In 1828, Bruno Payán was a witness and relative in the dispensation of Fausto Payán Estrella and Petronila Estrella Polanco declaring his age to be 52.

The original name documented for this family was Pallán which using modern conversion of the double L to a Y becomes Payán. These two spellings were used interchangeably throughout the 1800s when at the end of the century the surname began to mutate into Payamps, its modern variant. Both branches of Bruno and Fernando's families use Payamps in modern times indicating this may have been a colloquial version of the surname before the official change.

Other branches of the Payán family include José Payán who married to Ana Acevedo and Bernardina Payán who married Damaso Alonzo. José Payán resided in the city and served as civil official signing documents in the 1870s. Bernardina Payán originated in Santiago, but her family moved to Puerto Plata where she was a widow. She had two natural sons there in Pescado Bobo, Clemente and Alejandro, who were possibly the sons of a Luperón. She is likely the daughter of Fausto Payán Estrella and Petronila Estrella Polanco as their other children went on to have descendants in Pescado Bobo.
